In my last post, I delved into my personal motivations and background. Now, I’d like to dive deeper into the actual project: What’s the driving force behind it? What’s the endgame? What can readers expect from this blog?
The Goal
There’s no concrete “end goal” for this project (yet). But the driving vision is simple: I want to recreate the MMORPG “Flyff”.
Flyff – A Brief Excursion
For those unfamiliar: Flyff, or “Fly For Fun”, was originally developed in Korea in the early 2000s and found its way to Germany in 2006. Rather than adopting the dark, realistic styles of many MMORPGs of its time, Flyff embraced colorful, cartoonish graphics. This light, refreshing design set it apart. I remember long nights spent with friends, chasing the next big adventure. From floating islands to epic boss battles – to me, Flyff was more than just a game.
However, I don’t plan to simply replicate Flyff. I aim to capture its essence in a 2D Pixel Art game format. A rebuild, but with the heart of the original intact. I’m fully aware that I won’t be able to create an exact replica of the game; after all, I’m not an entire development studio in one person! 😄
More Than Just Coding
Recreating a game from scratch is a colossal endeavor that goes beyond mere coding. Here are the core components of the project:
- The Engine: The technical backbone of the game. More on this in the next post!
- Sprites and Drawing: Every character, every item, every environment – everything has to be designed and animated.
- Sound Design: The game’s acoustic atmosphere, from background music to sound effects. Maybe I’ll even reimagine some tracks in a 16-bit style – if it’s not too annoying!
- The Game Itself: Game mechanics, level design, storytelling – there’s an immense amount of work to be done here!
What Can Readers Expect?
I invite you to join me on this journey. You can look forward to weekly updates (at least that’s the plan!) offering deep insights, challenges faced, and hopefully some triumphant moments.
I hope you’ll accompany me through it, share feedback, and perhaps even learn a thing or two along the way.
So, stay tuned!
